PMC is excited to announce the addition of Dr. Julie McKibben and North Alabama Worker’s Care

Parkway Medical Center is excited to announce the addition of Dr. Julie McKibben and North Alabama Worker’s Care, Morgan County’s new fulltime Occupational Medicine Service for Decatur and Morgan County.

“We wanted to be able to offer a comprehensive program to the businesses in our community that will help prevent illness and injury and hopefully educate people on how to maintain good health,” said Tim McGill, Chief Executive Officer of Parkway.

Dr. Julie McKibben, board certified Occupational Medicine physician, comes to Parkway as a US Navy veteran relocating from Cincinnati, Ohio with her husband and 2 children. “A comprehensive occupational and environmental medicine program is a great avenue to foster collaboration between business/industry and healthcare which results in a net gain for all and I am pleased to have the opportunity to practice here in Morgan County,” said Dr. McKibben.

Occupational Medicine is the specialty of Preventive Medicine specifically devoted to prevention and management of occupational and environmental injury, illness and disability, and promotion of health and productivity of workers, their families, and communities.
Occupational medicine was previously identified as “industrial medicine.” This term was used when heavy industry employed physicians to provide acute medical and surgical care for employees. By the 1940’s the medical programs had spread to all types of businesses and organizations including clerical and service employees.

Today, the complexity and pervasiveness of modern industrial processes afford occupational medicine physicians the opportunity to address work site and community health and policy issues such as atmospheric pollution, product safety, health promotion, and benefits value management.

“Occupational and environmental medicine offers unlimited challenges and opportunities and I am excited to be a part of what Parkway is doing for the community,” said Dr. McKibben.

Loud Snoring? Sleepless Nights? Separate Bedrooms? The Sleep Disorders Center At Parkway Can Help!

When you sleep, your body rests and restores its energy levels. However, sleep is an active state that affects both your physical and mental well-being. A good night’s sleep is often the best way to help you cope with stress, solve problems, or recover from illness.

Unfortunately over 70 million people have some type of sleep disorder which can make getting the sleep needed almost impossible.  Of that 70 million, 18 million of them are related to sleep apnea.  This can affect your health in many ways- ranging from Heart attack, High Blood Pressure, Stroke, Headaches and even memory loss.

The Sleep Disorders Center at Parkway Medical Center opened in June 2006, seeing patients 2-3 nights a week and performing 58 sleep studies that year. This year the Sleep Disorders Center will perform over 400 sleep studies, 6 -7 nights a week.  It’s good to know that The Sleep Disorders Center at Parkway Medical Center is here to help you get back to a good nights sleep and improve your overall health.

You will receive quality care from our professional and friendly staff that has over 20 years of combined experience in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders. Our board certified sleep specialist Dr. M. Najjar has many years of experience in assisting patients with a variety of sleep issues.

Studies have shown in recent years that children also suffer from a variety of sleep disorders. These disorders are conditions that prevent children from getting a full night of rest on a regular basis. Children who have sleep disorders may have difficulty going to bed and falling asleep, and may frequently awaken during the night. Their sleep patterns may be erratic in terms of regularity and sleep duration and they often may be drowsy during daytime hours. These symptoms may lead to difficulties in a child’s mental and physical development. Children with sleep disorders are also more likely to be moody and to engage in undesirable behavior. Their learning abilities are affected as well, not doing well at school, poor test scores, falling asleep during class. A good night’s sleep is the start of a good day of health, work, school and play.

For that reason, The Sleep Disorders Center at Parkway Medical Center diagnoses and treats pediatric patients (Ages 5 and up) as well as adults. Using the latest technology and diagnostic equipment we are able to diagnose and treat a wide variety of sleep disorders.

Fast Track ER

School’s out, summer’s in, and that often means minor accidents and illnesses. Parkway’s Emergency Department’s Fast Track Service is now open to take care of the unexpected in a quick, efficient and thorough manner.

Open Saturdays through Mondays from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., when the greatest numbers of people seek emergency treatment, patients with non-urgent complaints and minor illnesses are seen more quickly, which improves the overall flow of all patients – urgent or not.

With a team of both a nurse and a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner, Fast Track team provides care for sprains, sore throats, lacerations, minor cuts and burns, and prescribing medication. Before discharge, the patient is seen by an emergency physician.

“While Parkway’s ER wait times already are well below the national average, the addition of the Fast Track program will reduce it even further,” says Parkway CEO Tim McGill.

Kubik Treats Unique Issues for Women

Until recently, women suffering from issues related to the pelvic organs and connective muscles/tissues had to see different doctors for each symptom. That’s no longer the case. Parkway is now home to this area’s only urogynecologist, Dr. Kari Kubik, who is specially trained to treat all of these functions which affect more and more women as they age.

Dr. Kubik combines the skills of a gynecologist and a urologist with the ability to evaluate and treat women’s reproductive systems, including the bowel, bladder, uterus, urinary tract, and the connecting tissues and muscles supporting them. “Anywhere from 35 to 40 percent of women experience some form of pelvic dysfunction from incontinence to prolapse,” explained Dr. Kubik. ”Urogynegology is an extremely specialized area of medicine, and Parkway is uniquely equipped to provide care to these women. We have an advanced laparoscopic surgical team and specially trained nursing staff to treat patients.”

Dr. Kubik specializes in minimally invasive surgery to treat patients.  She joined Parkway from Atlanta’s Piedmont Hospital.

Outpatient Unit Now a One-Stop Shop

To better serve its growing number of patients requiring same day surgery in a more private, convenient and accessible environment, Parkway recently upgraded its Outpatient Surgery Unit.  Located next to the ER entrance on the main floor, the facility houses advanced technology and equipment in one area to allow a more streamlined and efficient process for doctors, patients and their families.

The outpatient unit’s “one-stop shop” concept means patients no longer have to go to different areas all over the hospital as previously required.  Patients can stay in the same location for pre-admission registration, diagnostic tests, lab work, assessments and evaluations, as well as for the surgical procedure.

“It’s a win-win for everyone as outpatients will receive the same compassionate care they’ve always had at the hospital, but now with more privacy, access, convenience and comfort in one location,” says Parkway CEO Tim McGill.

Reserved parking, convenient patient drop-off and pick up, and a spacious comfortable lobby also are available. For more information, please consult your doctor.
